Problem Gambling Treatment

Gambling Problem? We Can Help.

Gambling Treatment Program

What is Problem Gambling?

Problem gambling includes all gambling behavior patterns that compromise, disrupt or damage personal, family or vocational pursuits. Unlike recreational gambling, problem gambling is an addiction – like alcoholism or drug addiction. Recreational gamblers can gamble occasionally and then stop. Problem gamblers can’t stop gambling – even when they lose all their money, lose their jobs, families and often their lives.

Some problem gamblers are easy to spot. They talk about betting all the time or continually look for ways to get gambling money. They may go to the racetrack every day or buy dozens of lottery tickets at once. But many problem gamblers hide their addiction.

The Three Phases of Problem Gambling

Gambling Treatment Program

Winning

Losing

Desperation

Gambling starts as fun, social activity. People sometimes win large amounts, but it's not always about winning money. Sometimes gamblers are re-warded by the excitement, the dreams of winning or the escape from everyday problems and stresses.

The trouble begins. Gamblers feel that their behavior is under control – but it is not. They seek more action, lose and gamble to win it back. They hide their losses and borrow money to continue gambling. Concerned others start to notice.

Problem gamblers become desperate, knowing they’re in trouble, but they still can’t quit. They are about to hit rock bottom. Everything has gone bad. They’ve lost all their money, lost their jobs, and lost their families. They often steal or commit illegal activities to finance their gambling.

Problem Gambling is a Treatable Addiction.

Because problem gambling is a treatable addiction, problem gamblers don't have to let gambling ruin their lives. Meridian Services, Inc. offers specialized counseling and recovery programs for gamblers -- and for concerned others -- to help turn their lives around and to change the downward spiral of problem gambling.
